Do you ever start seriously wondering about what is going ON with your kid? Normally, Annabelle is a pretty fun-loving kind of girl. She LOVES her friends, and she especially loves her friend Clare. The two of them are only a few months apart, and they’re so funny together. Clare’s mom is a good friend, and we once traveled up to Nebraska with the little girls to visit the Omaha Zoo together. My abiding memory of that trip is chasing after the two of them in Omaha’s Whole Foods, while they held hands and ran, giggling and zig-zagging through the store, knocking into patrons and almost taking out an entire display of organic wine. Jeeze. Last time we went to Crown Center, the girls did a remix of that experience, and I remember buckling Annabelle into the car afterwards and her telling me, “My cheeks hurt from laughing with my FAVORITEST friend, Clare!”

So. Having firmly established Annabelle’s affection for Clare, it was a little puzzling on Monday when Clare came over to play and was greeted by an exceedingly grumpy Annabelle, who in rare form, sat in our playroom with her arms crossed and rump firmly planted inside a laundry basket. Her attitude was especially strange since the entire weekend was spent counting down until the hour in which Clare would finally arrive to play. But Annabelle refused to move from the laundry basket, scowling and announcing what Clare was “allowed” to play with and what she must.not.touch. Super friendly, right? Yikes. However… Clare is a charmer, and Annabelle eventually seemed to snap out of it enough to leave her perch.

And what did I discover inside that laundry basket?

Annabelle had dumped all of her tiny dollhouse people and furniture into the bottom of the laundry basket, covered them with a blanket and stuffed animals, then SAT ON THEM to prevent her BEST FRIEND from enjoying her toys! Buhahahaha! It’s hilarious now, thinking of her plotting how to keep certain toys ‘safe’ and deciding to SIT ON THEM, but at the time I was a little shocked. It seemed so out of character for a playdate with her beloved Clare.

BUT THEN. That night, she came down with a 103 fever and has been miserable ever since. Poor thing. I almost breathed a sigh of relief, since it makes her grumpy behavior much more understandable. Plus, aside from the snot, the coughing, the sneezing… there’s the falling asleep in random chairs at random times, which trust me, would never happen if she wasn’t actually sick.

She sure is cute when she’s sick and asleep. Even if a fever brings out the inner tyrant.
